What the CDC actually said in their most recent update on transmission is that transmission from shared surfaces is now thought to be less of a threat than previously thought, and that it is primarily spread from person to person through respiratory droplets. Less. Primarily. Not that it is never transmitted from shared surfaces.
And when you are talking about shared surfaces, clearly some are potentially more dangerous than others. Like a basketball. Or a volleyball. You can’t play those sports without those balls getting covered with a heck of a lot of tiny ‘respiratory droplets’ that multiple players touch. Then one touch to your face or mouth and wham. Why do you think refs and staff are constantly wiping down those balls?
Here is a direct quote from the new CDC guidance on transmission:
“It may be possible that a person can get COVID 19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes. This is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads, but we are still learning more about this virus.”
