Any team with overwhelming talent can overcome penalties. I always thought Pinkel maximized Mizzou, given its built-in deficiencies. One way he did that was to have a team that committed a below average amount of penalties each year. Another way was avoid turnovers. It is also very true that a team with overwhelming talent can overcome penalties whereas teams like Pinkel had need to avoid them. I remember some of the old Nebraska Oklahoma battles. The Sooners would often commit six or seven fumbles and still beat the 'Skers. So I really don't think a comparision to LSU and Alabama is applicable.
