The disciples thought when Jesus came riding in and the people were laying down palm branches that this was the start of the earthly kingdom of triumph. They had no clue that Jesus had to die and rise for that to occur. But it would be a Heavenly kingdom.

And Old Testament believers were saved by their faith in the promise. It was always Jesus Christ, but it had not yet played out in earthly time. But faith in the promise was their salvation as well. From the story of Abram:

Genesis 15:5-6 "Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”

And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness."
