The inaccuracy was a result of poor preparation/practice IMO

Of course, I wasn't there, but everything I've read about and seen from him indicates he didn't put in the work to get better like you'd expect from a starting quarterback.
Probably didn't help that his position coach was Andy Hill, who until that point had never coached quarterbacks.
Had Mauk taken football seriously, I think he could've been one of our all-time greats.
