media elites and the intelligentsia now live in the DC to NYC corridor. They all have the same value, beliefs and experiences so they all speak with the same voice. They mistakenly believe NYC=America at large.
So when they saw a crisis in NYC they immediately assumed that there was a crisis everywhere. And since everyone reporting and opining about this was seeing the same thing their beliefs quickly became the consensus. Something the left continues to confuse with fact.
When I was young there were thriving newspapers across the country which meant that there were strong voices everywhere. When I read the Sunday op-eds there were strong voices coming from Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Miami and all across the land. Now every voice comes from NYC and they all sound the same. I understand why local newspapers are fading but it has not been good for journalism in America.
