The best decision was to do nothing. Move the college senior class out, move the high school seniors/incoming college freshmen in. Simple as that.
But the NCAA didn’t have the courage and good sense to do that. They wilted under pressure from college softball coaches who were crying crocodile tears for their poor seniors (not to mention their own chances for glory, and personal profit from bonus money for advancing far next year in the playoffs).
Now they have to live with a lot of bad consequences, some known, some still unknown. All to placate the angry coaches and sad, sad college seniors.
This was very predictable on the part of the NCAA. Given the choice between a tough decision and screwing things up royally, is anyone really surprised they took the latter choice? And then patted themselves on the back for how wise and kind and smart they are.
Over the next 4 years a lot of players are not going to get as much of a chance, if any, to play college softball, with 5 recruiting classes jammed into rosters only made for 4 recruiting classes. But hey, at least the seniors (an unknown potion of them) are happy. That’s a great trade off.
