mid-range isn’t cool.
They look at advanced stats that say 3 pt shooting is more efficient.
Example on 100 shots:
3-pt decent is 35% which results in 105 points.
2-pt (midrange) decent is 45% which results in 90 points.
3-pt good is 40% which results in 120 points.
2-pt good is 55% which results in 110 points.
What this does not consider is that, for most players, it is much easier to shoot 55% from 12-15 feet than it is to shoot 40% from three.
A more equal comparison is 55% for mid range versus 35% from three, at which point mid range is more efficient.
This becomes more true as defenses have adjusted to the modern game of layups and threes. The defense tends to leave the mid range open. Kevin Durant has really taken advantage of this in his offense of attack the last couple-three years.
In fact, there have been lots of stories about how he is bringing back the mid range game.
This is very similar to the scenario in which the San Francisco 49ers became such a dominant running team this year. To keep up with the modern passing, linebackers have gotten smaller and faster, The Niners countered that by pounding the hell out of them with the run.
Now this will sound contradictory, but I am also not one who really complains about the number of three point attempts we take. The three point shot is and will continue to be a very critical part of the game, because you have to make some of those in order to open up the other opportunities.
For example, even in a win, people complained about the fact that we still took 19 threes against Alabama even though we only made 5. In no way, shape, or form is the problem that we took 19 3’s. The problem is that we made five instead of seven.
Had we taken 10 instead of 19, we probably only make two, and we might have lost.
What this team needs, is to get better at shooting threes, get better at shooting other shots, and play offense to where we have more total shot attempts from anywhere.
