When he was being judged on who he was he floundered. When it became clear Bernie was moving to take over they decided to clear the field and rally around Joe. He has done nothing rhetorically on the stump or debate stage to earn it. Those were the places where he was failing. The dems were in a panic and rallied.

Now he goes back to being the candidate who could not generate excitement or support on his own. And the problems with that will soon become evident.
