Neither Pete or Amy had a shot to win. It turned out timing was about everything. If they hold out - and yet the guy pulls out a win - that holding out will be remembered. Both of these two figures very likely have a solid career awaiting them in Democratic politics from high profile jobs in coming admins to future runs. I think Pete will win the office at some point. He can be a player in that party for the next thirty years !! and then not be 70.
It is not fear of Bernie but fear of Trump. Most folks don't think Bernie could win that - leaving us with four more years of a highly destructive figure. So the Dems stood up to support one guy who looks pretty frigging strong against Trump. People seek normalcy right now. Joe delivers that. In Trump v Sanders, one could argue Sanders being the least stabilizing or normal.
