Dictatorships can be wonderful if you have a wise, benevolent dictator. It isn't like there wasn't inherent danger in a representative republic, but the idea was to safeguard things as well as possible until such time the people can no longer responsibly handle the responsibilities given them.

Democracy is great until 51% of the people are cannibals.
