Yeah it’s a bit low...

It’s fun arguing about polls particularly early in the season, waiting for the next round of games. The NFCA and ESPN polls remind me of 2 things: Most voters don’t really pay attention and do their research, and they pay attention to the big shiny object that they last saw (our blowout loss to Minny).
We’ve easily earned a ranking around 15, maybe a little higher, but came in at 18/19 in the two major polls. Here are the most egregious errors.
1. Being barely behind Georgia in one poll and barely ahead of them in the other. Simply ridiculous. Georgia is 8-3, with one win over a top 30 team, 25/26 Northwestern. One win. We have 5 wins over top 30 teams: 14/14 Ok St, 17/15 Minny, 24/25 Virginia Tech, 27/27 Notre Dame, 32/28 Baylor. Georgia has lost to 1/1 UCLA, 20/20 Texas Tech, and 36/34 South Florida. Maybe a rough wash in losses, but I’d still give us the advantage there. A loss to South Florida is way worse than either of our losses to Minny and James Madison. But 5 wins over top 30 teams vs 1 win is not arguable.
2. Being behind Oregon is even a bigger joke. They are 9-0, wow. But they have not played a single game against a team ranked in the top 25 in either poll. Not one. In fact, they have not played a single game against any team even receiving votes in either poll. Not one. While we have played 7 such games. Their schedule has been awful, and doesn’t get much better the rest of the way. At least this weekend they play 2 teams with a pulse, Northwestern and Notre Dame. There should be a rule that you can’t receive a vote in either poll until you play at least 1 solitary team that is receiving a vote.
3. 16/16 Arizona St and 13/11 Kentucky are ahead of us in both polls. Both cases are at least arguable, although I think we have a better overall body of work at this point. ASU has a win over 25/26 Northwestern, and 2 wins over Kentucky. That’s nice. We of course have 3 wins over top 25 teams and 2 more over teams barely outside the top 25. Our 2 losses were to top 25 teams. ASU’s losses were to a ranked Tennessee team and an awful loss to unranked Western Michigan. And I don’t understand the love for Kentucky. They have played a far weaker schedule than us. They beat Minny (who hasn’t?) and lost twice to ASU. One win over top 30 teams, while we have 5.
4. Minnesota and Oklahoma State are ranked slightly ahead of us. No big argument there from me, our body of work is similar to both. We have head to head wins over both (and a loss to Minny). Their signature wins are over FSU and Alabama respectively, which gives them a lot of love from voters. Despite those 2 programs combining for 9 losses in the first 2 weeks of the season.
