Along about that same time my Dad got to meet President Carter. Carter was flying into Kansas City for an appearance and Carter's advance people thought it would be good for the President to have a meet and greet/photo opportunity with area farmers to express his concern for agricultural matters. State party honchos called my Dad and asked him to put together a small group of dem loyal farmers and find a farm in Platte County near the airport to stage the event. AFAIK, there was no Secret Service involved in any of the planning. Dad gathered a dozen or so farmers and loaded the pickup with square wheat straw bales for them to sit on. Carter talked with them only a few minutes, but it was covered by local and national news that night on tv.
