My uneducated opinion is they jack the rates up so high

to get better negotiated terms from insurers.
My son's recent surgery.. the hospital bill alone... not including any doctors was over $12K. He was in the hospital for about 10 hours from the morning to late afternoon. Had an IV drip, used a paper gown, a set of sheets on a bed and some tylenol.
