Post-mortem on the Arky loss...

We did what we needed to at the start of the game, came out strong and took the crowd out of the game. But the 8 point lead at the end of the first quarter could have easily been 14-15 points. With a 6-0 lead, and Arky shooting bricks, we missed two wide open 3s, missed a layup, and turned the call over. May not have won the game, regardless, but we could have kept it closer farther into the game if we had built up a larger lead early. Just didn’t take advantage of opportunities.
Got good games from Frank and Blackwell, as needed if we were going to have any chance at an upset on the road. 19 pts for Frank, 18 pts, 7 rebounds, 5 assists for Blackwell. But Frank only played 16 minutes, before finally fouling out. Her defense fundamentals are not good. Too many silly reaching fouls. She needs to understand her importance to the team and stay on the court, cut out the fouling.
Biggest upside was a second straight quality game from Troup, 13 pts, 8 rebounds, 6 assists. She didn’t shoot well from the field, 2-8, 0-4 from 3s, but hit 9-10 FTs and played tough all game. If that light stays on for her it’s going to be the difference in winning a few more games the rest of the way. Hope she starts getting major minutes now, at the expense of some of the seniors who just aren’t producing.
The seniors. Sigh. Needed big games from at least several of them, and got a paltry combined 21 points between Smith, Chavis, Roundtree, and Schuchts. That killed us as much as anything else.
Now we have SC at home on Thursday night, and it’s hard to see that game ending up anything but ugly. SC is 16-1, 4-0 in conference, and was ranked #4 in the nation last week, before the top 3 teams all lost (UConn, Oregon, Oregon St). Will be interesting to see where they are ranked when the new poll comes out today. Could conceivably be hosting a #1 team on Thursday.
