his wife was a stay at home Mom taking care of their 8 surviving children (one died before coming home from the hospital after birth).
He built their home with the help of his brothers. He also made some of the furniture & my MIL did a lot of sewing & canning. They had a big garden & lived very frugally.
He said the most he ever made in a year was $32,000 & a lot were less than that. One year work was so slow they took the younger kids out of state to work, camping out in West Virginia until work picked up again back here.
They sent the kids to private grade schools and paid cash to put them through college. The kids had savings when they got out.
Another year when work was slow he built a 2nd house on his property and sold the first one.
He retired in his early 60s, not because he wanted to, but because work had been very slow for a couple of years & he wanted to give the younger guys a chance.
They're millionaires because they never wasted anything and were careful with their money.
