I think the Mastermind only went through it because he actually took control of Elliot (I'm assuming this happened right after the suicide attempt when Darlene was no longer around).
Hence why his therapist only knew Mastermind and Mr. Robot. Had she known Elliot before the takeover, she should have been able to notice the difference.
And why Darlene was the only one who ever knew the truth.
Also, it totally was an Alderson Loop, except it was for the real Elliot. And Darlene was the exit clause that was removed.
Loved it.
