Witcher is good, but really confusing so far

because Witchers and mages live hundreds of years, the timeline keeps jumping forward and back without really stating such.
some stuff in the story is happening a hundred years before other things and its all intertwined and confusing as all hell.
I can kind of follow because I played the games and recognize some of the storylines and where major events occurred in the history of the world, but I don't know what someone would do who isn't familiar with the source.
