I said that publishers can be held liable for content that they produce if it is untrue. Currently, FB and Google can post anything they wish on their sites and there is nothing anyone can legally do about it if it is patently false. If the NYT or CNN were to do it they CAN be sued.
I simply stated that if social media sites are going to make editorial decisions based upon content then they should be held to the same standard as other providers.
If they want to be hands-off and keep the protections then so be it. If they want editorial control of content then they need to take responsibility for what they allow on their sites. They cannot have their cake and eat it to.
