not because they claim to simply be hosting content from other providers.
If the Times ran a story trashing someone they can be sued if the information in that story is false. Facebook and Google could not be sued for that same story because they are legally viewed as hosts not content providers. But if they are making editorial decisions about what can be on their sites then they should also be responsible for what they are allowing.
They were given the exemption to encourage them to provide an open forum to ideas and discussions. If they are making political decisions about content then they are no longer doing that and should have those protections removed.
