St. L & KC are "border areas"

The last numbers I've seen indicate the St. Louis metro and Kansas City metro areas have populations of about 2.7 and 1.7 million respectively.
Both are border areas. That means that the percentage of Mizzou alums and fans in them is less than would likely be the case if they weren't border areas. As border cities, their respective media (print and electronic) serve both Missuri and Illinois/Kansas markets. Coverage of Tiger sports are is more diluted than if they were soley in Missouri.
Mizzou is not the number one sports story in either. In St. Louis its the Cardinals and in Kansas City its the Chiefs (or Kansas basketball). Neither is a "hot bed" for high school football. I.e. compare Missouri high school football to Texas high school football.
