the Jewishness of Jesus. Particularly chapters 1-5.
A male child miraculously born to Jewish parents. A fierce tyrant in the land (Herod) set on destroying him. This child is supernaturally protected from harm in Egypt. Leaves Egypt and is said to pass through the waters (baptism). Goes into the wilderness to be tested for a long time. Afterwards he goes up to the mountain and delivers God's law to those following him.
Herod parallels the Egpytian pharaoh. Jesus' baptism parallels the crossing of the Red Sea. The forty days of testing in the wilderness parallels the 40 years of wandering. The Sermon on the Mount parallels Moses delivering the laws on Mount Sinai.
The writer of Matthew intended to show Jesus as a new, greater Moses.
