Under normal circumstances, a new coach can recruit kids on the hypothetical program will be, and thus you often see a new coach recruiting bump in the first year.
In Martin's circumstances here, he took a deal that every coach in America would have made and went all in year one with the Porters. It didn't work out.
The result is he's trying to sell a hypothetical program while in his 3rd year of a program, having not done a lot of winning in his first couple of seasons due to injuries, and only having Tilmon to show from his first recruiting class.
The worst possible outcome of the first recruiting class pretty much happened, and that set things back quite a bit.
