Bible message forum.. Seems like 90% of the time you say something that goes against their beliefs, the Christian comes back attacking that I must have something to confess.
The thread was someone asking if a person is raped, have they committed a sin. Seems pretty dumb question to me.. but ok.
The discussion continues with some scriptures.. but I point out one missing since the previous post just said rapists were to be killed.
TigerMatt:
Notice "betrothed" woman. Rape is handled differently if the woman is not married or engaged.
Deuteronomy 22
28 If a man meets a virgin who is not engaged, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are caught in the act, 29 the man who lay with her shall give fifty shekels of silver to the young woman’s father, and she shall become his wife. Because he violated her he shall not be permitted to divorce her as long as he lives.
Christian responds:
The Scripture you quote indicates that the unmarried woman agreed to the man's advances. So this is seduction, not rape, which is a crime against the spirit as well as the body and not to be minimized.
TigerMatt:
No it does not. The same language is used in both verse 25 and 28.. "the man seizes her and lies with her".
The only difference regarding the woman is in verse 25 the woman is engaged and verse 28, the woman is single.
Christian responds:
The line of reasoning you are pursuing is dishonorable at best and criminal at worst. Do you have something you need to confess?
TigerMatt:
It's not my fault you don't understand the time the scriptures were written and that women who weren't virgins faced a hard life as it was difficult for such women to get married. This was when women couldn't support themselves.
Look at Tamar and Amnon in 2 Samuel 13. She was raped by Amnon, but him sending her away instead of marrying her was worse to her than the rape itself.
This is specifically why Deuteronomy 22:28-29 commands that a rapist must marry the unmarried, unengaged woman he raped and cannot divorce her.
