No payments of any kind. Yes, you get a scholarship and you get expenses covered. You get a great meal play (as they already do), etc...
Eligibility requirements should be raised.
Now, I haven't looked into it enough to say what the ACT score should be, but pick a number that is in line with legitimately viable college students. Regardless of sports, too many kids are in college these days that don't belong there and don't want to be there.
Yes, you will eliminate a number of elite athletes and many people will complain that the games won't be as good. Those people don't know enough about the sport to make that argument. A MoValley conference game is just as exciting as a SEC conference game. Yes, a few of the biggest athletic moves aren't there, but the competition level is the same between the teams.
You make college sports a competition between college kids, and in 5 years you won't know the difference anymore.
There are multiple options in pro/semi-pro leagues that kids can try to go to if they aren't college material or if they don't want to go to college but fell forced to. Hell, lots of juco's have trade programs. That could be an option for many just as going to trade school should be an option for a lot of kids that are pushed into college.
