and fans of those non-profit universities want to uphold for many reasons. Integrity of the game is one reason. Maintaining a level playing field is another. Wanting teams of "student-athletes" who play with pride for the university in exchange for a free education and other benefits related to their mission as a student-athlete. Furthermore, universities don't want to become "minor leagues" for the pro leagues with athletes that don't care about being student-athletes or the college experience.
Most of all, there's no reason to convert from amateurism to a pro "minor league" system since there are plenty of pro options available to the athletes who think they're ready and want to get paid like a pro.
If the NCAA abandons amateurism, it will be extremely off-putting to a large number of fans, and would be an embarrassment to our prestigious American universities.
