You miss the point of our and Israel's mideast goal which is to leave Israel the unquestioned power in the region. Iraq and Iran stood in the way of that. Iraq had virtually no army to speak of and an easily demonized and sold villain. They could sell the war carried out in a flat undefended desert. Iraq has a fearsome army. They fight back and the country has serious mountains. We don't do mountains so targeting one of the two that the strat called for was easy.

It was also wrong.
