obvious. Yet we insist on wasting money and lives in a hopeless cause. In THIS case, why the hell don't we believe them.

Instead of thinking we can trust the taliban to do a "deal" that'll make it all ok for us to leave and they'll be good. Our leadership is not smart enough to keep alive.
