you're right, it's a waste and we've gained nothing and lost lives and tons of money. To a broader point, the Afghans generally like Americans and generally do not like the Taliban.
However; they also generally just want to be left alone. I can't tell you how many meetings basically went like this:
we want Americans to help us get rid of the Taliban, but we aren't really willing to fight to do it ourselves and if the Taliban ends up in control that's fine too. we just want to be left alone.
most just honestly couldn't be bothered to care one way or another. obviously there are Afghans who do fight (on either side of the conflict) but most are just poor farmers and laborers.
From my experience, they are not interested in democracy or at least not to the extent they are willing to fight and die for it. I think the best we can hope for in the case of many middle eastern countries is a somewhat benevolent dictator who just isn't Hitler.
