ST. LOUIS — At Clay Elementary School on Tuesday, students were greeted on the first day by their new teachers, a new principal and grief counselors.
Second-grader Xavier Usanga, 8, was fatally shot Monday outside his home near an 18-year-old who was also shot but survived.
In the Hyde Park neighborhood on Tuesday, neighbors came to the Usanga home to console family members. Police officers in cars and on foot were seen circling the 3500 block of north 14th Street.
Gracie Koenig, 20, lives across the street from the Usanga family and said she had babysat for Xavier. She liked to braid his hair and sneak him his favorite spicy potato chips.
Like other neighbors, Koenig said the block of vacant lots, homes and the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church was mostly quiet.
"We're scared," Koenig said. "It was just kids in the yard."
Xavier’s death makes him the 11th area child killed in a shooting since June. About half of them attended St. Louis Public Schools, said Kelvin Adams, superintendent of the St. Louis Public School District.
