I wholly applaud taking out a knee in such an exchange. Just b/c you think some punk is trying to kill an officer does not in my estimation give the officer the authority (moral anyway, I don't know about legal) to shoot the punk in such a fashion to take his life.

THAT he may be "society's problem" does not factor it. He was "society's problem" all along. Perhaps society might want to re-evaluate steps to allow such obviously clever and entreprenurial young men to serve as a benefit to society in terms of education and training opportunities. If "Society" turns around to say 'well we tried schooling and we tried school reform and seeing that those efforts did not work perfectly, "society' should throw in the towel and see such clever boys suddenly in criminal pursuits and those such as you will reason - "better we shot him dead" so to minimize some future problem he might pose.
