Getting to the speed of light is an engineering challenge, one that will probably never be overcome. Surpassing the speed of light is simply not possible. That is the difference between an engineering challenge and a physical impossibility.
The issues with ethanol were about what they did to the engine. Ethanol mixtures burn hotter and create some buildup issues that had to be overcome. So once again it was an engineering problem, not a physics problem.
