If you're talking about politicians, I think it's just the nature of the political cycle. Early on, you have to generate enough spin and get your name mentioned to attract the dollars to stay in. As it goes on toward the primaries, the stances typically soften and go back toward the middle to attract a greater number. It's an odd process to say the least.
