Mizzou's problems from the late 70's to date have always been self inflicted. LSU, ALA, UF, have a football culture that is recognized by their respective administrations. Our move to the SEC just happened to be perfect timing when Mizzou football had some powerful friends in those decision making positions. If realignment was happening now, I doubt football has the sway to get the administration to back them up.
