You hit the nail on the head. A positive group mentality is the key. Living in Nebraska all my life, I can tell you that a lot of optimism, with the delusion that comes with past success is most important...and what has kept Nebraska football fans as some of the most insufferable douche bags in the country all these most recent 20 years of mediocrity.
