brilliant speaker and thinker.

Not so in this drivel.

He said, "It is not just the right of the person who speaks to be heard, it is the right of everyone in the audience to listen and to hear."

He said that to not listen is to deny your right to hear something.

That is idiotic.

He conflates and confuses the right to do something with the requirement to do so.

People have the right NOT TO listen to drivel. They do not have the right to silence speech with which they disagree, but hitchens makes it seem that we all have the obligation to listen and hear speech with which we disagree. That of course is absurd on its face.

We have the right to listen to the heretic. Of course we do.

But we have no obligation to do so.

We have the right but certainly no obligation to listen to speech that we find vulgar, offensive, obscene, hateful, insightful to violence or just plain stupid.

We do not forfeit our rights when we eschew the opportunity to be offended.

Hitchens was always been given to smugness and pomposity, much like the raskol but with some justification in hitchens' case. Notice how both hitchens and the raskol reference the works and deeds of others by name, as if familiarity with the works of others somehow elevates their own.

I for one have the right to read the tripe posted by The Idiot. I choose not to. I feel no obligation to read anything by very stupid people. But my right to do so remains intact.

If hitchens had the mastery of the english language to which he pretends, he would have said that people have the right to be heard and the rest of us SHOULD exercise our right to take advantage of the opportunity to hear things with which we disagree.

And for the record, i listened to only the first few minutes of the speech. Like the raskol, hitchens can be insufferable. But again unlike the raskol, there is substance in his insufferableness.
