And generally, teams use a combo guard in place of a traditional PG, not in place of the shooting guard...if they play 1 combo guard. Some teams will play 2 combo guards instead of traditional PG & SG.

In college basketball, if you are looking for 2 positions that you can say are the same thing, it is Shooting Guard and Small Forward. For at least 20 years now, those two spots have been the same thing.
