You should read Nemesis by Max Hastings which is a history of the last two years of the war with Japan. The soviets did indeed have an eye on the partitioning of Japan and that did factor into the decision to drop the bomb. Roosevelt had invited and even promised Stalin spoils if he participated in the defeat of Japan and by 1945, the US had wished those overtures had never been made. In any event, the history of the end of the war is not as cut and dry as many want it to be. Historians seriously doubt if we would have ever invaded the main islands - plans were made up and casualties were estimated but it doesn't mean they would ever be enacted.
