I was paying the IRS my payroll taxes, which I submit quarterly
I accidentally flagged my Q1 2018 payment as Q2 on the form. Then paid Q2, Q3, Q4 as normal
So I get a letter telling me at the end of the year that I owe them like $600 + penalites, but that I'm also getting a $600 refund back for overpayment...so I'm like WTF
Well, what they did was apply my Q1 payment to Q2(even though Q2 hadn't even happened yet at that point), so then my Q2 got applied to Q3, Q3 got applied to Q4, and then Q4 had nowhere to go, it was an overage, all the while Q1 was sitting there as "unpaid"
GET A BETTER COMPUTER SYSTEM, IRS.
I sent them 100% of the money owed for 2018, but they were going to tell me I was short, but also over-paid(and slap penalties on to boot).
That took several phone calls to straighten out, and I'm still getting weird notices in the mail about it, here 5 months later.
