A family member was injured in an accident in Western Europe and was treated by the country's public health care system, two different public hospitals and one surgery.
The hospitals were very "spartan". I.e. no private or semi-private rooms, only multiple bed wards (12 to 18 beds). The wards were staffed by only one or two nurses, no nurses aids, assistants, etc. Patient care was performed by family members who would arrive as early as 6:00 a.m. and stay till 10:00 or 12:00 p.m. Amenities that are taken for granted in the U.S. hospitals were missing.
The family member was charged by her surgeon for the surgery.
