The cheaper the filter, the longer you can leave it and the better the filter, the more often you have to change it. A cheap filter is actually better for your system and can make a difference in your energy bill by reducing the time the system runs.
If you keep a relatively clean place and don't live on a gravel road with the windows open a lot, a $2-3 filter can easily last a year.
