Several Fortune 500 companies that are producing in China and shipping goods out of China are considering if not already making permanent decisions to move elsewhere. This started almost a year ago now. There was a Bloomberg article, I can’t find it now, after June 30 earnings calls last year. I remember Sketchers’ CEO stating they wheels were in motion to seeking an alternative country to conduct business.
Economics 101 does not assume this scenario. It’s always based on goods produced and sold in country XYZ have no alternatives to produce and ship in another country.... at a lower tariff (or no tariff at all).
If we start seeing large multi-national companies leave China, they are going to be in a real tight spot. The country is crap and it’s only leverage is cheap crap and cheap labor. Well cheap labor is in many other countries now, and cheap crap isn’t difficult to produce.
I don’t like what Trump is doing, and am anti-tariffs, taxes, barriers to commerce overall.....but if China gets hurt more than the US, then I’m okay with that. I guess.
