between he and Pickett, Watson is the one with the potential to become elite.
Dru and Mark, being older and more experienced, are likely to be the team leaders this year. But, most are in agreement that Dru does not have it in him to be a 20 ppg guy. Most believe he's a 12 ppg guy with some good assist numbers and just a good all around game. Mark has shown he could be a 15 ppg guy. Watson might be a 20 ppg guy as an upper classman.
As far as comparing Watson to Pickett....
for the year, Pickett averaged only 0.6 ppg more than Watson. Remember that Pickett is a year older and was clearly more ready to contribute early in college.
Starting with our first conference victory of this season, Pickett averaged 7.1 ppg the rest of the season. In that same time frame, Watson averaged 9.6 ppg. Watson had 2 20-point games in the final 2 weeks of the season, while Pickett had 1 all year.
As the season was winding down, most fans were noticing that Watson had started to come on and had passed Pickett, and the numbers bear that out.
In the last 10 games of the season, Watson was up to averaging 6 seconds of playing time more per game than Pickett and in the last 5 games, Watson's playing time really outpaced Pickett.
Now, I do not post all of this info to try to bag on Pickett and some of these fools will say that's what I'm doing. I fundamentally like all of our scholarship players and I really appreciate the type of player that Pickett is because that's a valuable role to have on a team. I post this info not to bag on Pickett, but to show that thinking Pickett's potential is higher than Watson's is just wrong. Maybe Watson will never reach his true potential and some of these guys will rant about how Pickett was better. That is a different debate in which many fans can't grasp the finer details.
