I think they thought they'd catch him on other stuff, or embarrass him enough to take him out in the election. I think they know the Russia-gate thing is dead in the water, but believe they can make him appear ugly enough (with his help, I might add) to make voters choose someone else.

Which is why, from the other side, Trump's actions are strange. He's ****ting on his own good news cycle.
