"There's a reason I stayed here," said Sampson, who was named Wednesday as one of four finalists for Naismith Coach of the Year. "I've learned over the years that you don't mess with happy. And I'm happy."
And why shouldn't he be? UH has a $25 million state-of-the-art practice facility. The $60 million Fertitta Center opened to sellout crowds in December. The Cougars have posted 22, 21, 27 and 31 wins the last four seasons. His son, Kellen, is his top assistant. Daughter Lauren is the program's director for external operations.
"I think when you get to the point he is in his career, I don't know if he's chasing something," Kellen said. "He has an awesome perspective on college basketball. I think he recognizes as much as anybody how this place has elevated and the things that we have here.
"Happiness for him, it's family, it's friends. But it's also being at a place where we have a chance to compete for championships, and we can do that here. This place keeps getting better and better."
