Then we specifically excluded Chinese immigrants in 1882. We enacted further restrictions on all Asian immigrants around WWI. In the 20s we stacked quotas heavily in favor of England, Ireland, and Germany.
In 1942 we passed the Bracero Program which opened the floodgates for Mexican laborers to fill agricultural jobs. This program ended in 1964. We didn't end the Asian exclusion until 1952. We have adjusted our immigration policies to accommodate the Cubans and others seeking political asylum. We overhauled our policies under LBJ to correct "un-American wrongs" in our xenophobic policies of the past.
Many of the "invaders" Trump refers to are asylum seekers going through legal channels that we set up. The caravans were such people.
Our immigration policies have evolved, but we had risen above systemic xenophobia. Now Trump reintroduces it as a campaign rallying cry. It's sad and un-American. You don't have to vilify an entire demographic to create better policy or more effective border security.
