Biggest takeaway from the huge GA series win...

To me it was the performances of both Gasper and Daniel. Gasper had come back to earth after her amazing shutout of a top 15 Arizona State team to start the season, but threw really well on Saturday to keep the cap on an explosive GA offense.
And Daniel was nothing short of amazing in her 3 plus innings of relief. We don’t have a chance for a 7th inning rally to take the series if she doesn’t just shut down the powerful GA offense. I remember how a light seemed to come on for Cheyenne Baxter her senior season when SEC play started, and she turned into an ace, seemingly out of nowhere. She always had good stuff, looked great in practice and would throw well for brief periods, then seemed to lose confidence and unravel. Not much shocked me more than her transformation part way through her senior season. Daniel must have a ton of confidence after Sunday, and you have to hope that same kind of light clicked on for her.
Norman will be fine, she just shut down that GA offense Friday and deserved better, and she just kept battling GA on Sunday even when they were hitting her. I love her bulldog mentality, no pun intended. She will keep us in a lot of games this year even against top 20 teams, but for Mizzou to get back to the NCAA tournament, it is critical that Gasper and at least one other pitcher step up and show they can control powerful SEC caliber hitters. Maybe that’s Daniel now.
We have a killer first half of the SEC season. Depending on where Kentucky is ranked tomorrow, we may well have our first 4 series all against teams ranked in the top 10 at the time. At the least it will be 4 straight series against top 15 teams. Yes GA is over rated and untested due to an awful schedule, and it’s uncertain where they will end up by the end of the year. My guess is closer to top 20-25 in the nation than top 10. We want them to finish strong to keep a higher value on our 2 wins over them. But we are going to take our lumps with this schedule in our first 4 conference series, with Tennessee to follow Alabama, GA, and Kentucky. People shouldn’t panic if we only go, say, 4-8 in those first 12 games. That’s not bad considering the competition. I’m looking more to how well we compete in those 12 games, and the toughness we show, and the confidence our pitching staff develops. The last 4 series are much more manageable.
