And your argument does not take into account the importance of FT's at the end of games, that opposing teams can have some affect on who shoots the FT's (and would much rather a 52% shooter than a 68% shooter).
Games are won and lost at the FT line at the end. 1 PT may seem insignificant out of 100+ total pts in the game but sometimes it's the difference.
