As for Jontay’s former frontcourt teammate, Jeremiah Tilmon is working on a new part of his game: the 3-pointer. The 6-10 center is taking 1,000 shots a day, 400 at 7 a.m. and another 600 in the afternoon. Tilmon didn’t attempt a single 3-pointer all season, but he’s working to expand his range.
“It doesn’t look bad,” Martin said. “It didn’t look bad before. It’s just the reps. You tweak his rotation a little because he palms the ball a little when he shoots it even if you watch his free throw. If he can get a lot in and he knocks them down and works on it in practice he’s allowed to shoot them in the game.”
This doesn’t mean Tilmon is going to reinvent his game and make a living on the perimeter jacking jumpers.
“I don’t know if that’ll become who he is as a player,” Martin said. “Because he’s so strong and physical and really improved around the rim just in his few workouts. Once you get in that second season, even the summertime you see things different because you’ve been through it and it slows down somewhat. He’ll be a tough guy to defend around the rim. Late in the season he did a good job going against the double teams.”
Translation: Tilmon is still a post player — but maybe with a new tool in his belt.
