slavery.
What would it be like if you owned slaves?
That imo is a profound and meaningful question for 8th graders to consider.
Assignments that ask students to imagine what it is like to .... are outstanding. It is more than just regurgitating facts, if facts are even still taught in government schools.
It teaches kids to consider an extremely important question:
WHAT IF....
That is why i like hypothetical questions and post them here occasionally. It is a self check on your principles and your ethics. Which is why 90's personal idiot and others like meat, murph and mullet mock them.
Imagine you were a slave owner.... What a great question to ask a student. ESPECIALLY a black student.
But some little princess was "uncomfortable" with the question. And god forbid we have some little daisy uncomfortable in a learning environment. So her diligent daddy asked lots of people and they were all outraged. Or enough were outraged to demand the assignment be stopped.
They were required to be outraged about anything concerning slavery other than, "Slavery was an evil perpetrated by white people on black people."
That's all anyone needs to know.
And of course the cowardly school principal (not principle) apologized profusely as did the teachers.
I think learning SHOULD MAKE students uncomfortable.
But that would hurt some feelings.
God help us.
