Then there is dead money, otherwise known as cap hit, which is the amount of money that is allocated to a player for the salary cap purposes. They are two different things.

Right now Eric Berry's cap hit is $16.5 million for next year.

Bottom line, if he can pass a physical and the Chiefs cut him with a post June 1st designation, it save the Chiefs almost $10 million in cap room for 2019 and his cap hit is only $6.5 million. That's a lot of savings and the Chiefs are no way stuck with him if they want to move on. Plenty of incentive to do so if they feel like that's the best course of action.

Yes, the Chiefs front office know all of this.
